Portrait of Nandhu 🦋 panchakarma terapeut
Nandnu is one of those people you meet on your journey who impresses with his energy and presence. He works as a panchakarma therapist with Dr. Unni in Kovalam in South India
Here he talks about being a panchakarma therapist and Ayurveda.
Nandhu says: "Being an Ayurvedic therapist is my favorite job. Being an Ayurvedic therapist is not only about treating the patient, but also about taking good care of them.
Nandhu says that Ayurveda has been a natural part of everyday life and lifestyle in his family for several generations. In the past, it was quite common for people to rub their bodies with oil and take a bath when they came home from work. The oil bath, which is described in Ayurveda, has both a cleansing and invigorating effect and was previously widespread in Kerala.
Today, a busier and more hectic lifestyle has changed the picture. The younger generations live differently, and Ayurveda plays a smaller role in their daily lives, and fewer young people choose not to follow the panchakarma path because the work is demanding and the working conditions are perceived as less attractive – even though interest in training to become an Ayurvedic doctor is increasing.
Nandhu himself has studied Ayurvedic treatment methods and massage. He has worked for four years with Dr. Unni as a panchakarma therapist and has a diploma in Ayurveda and panchakarma nursing.
He emphasizes that Ayurvedic treatments are unique from person to person. It is a traditional form of treatment, where the entire work is based on Ayurvedic lifestyle and health science, the treatments, clinical experience and a deep understanding of the body. At the same time, he points to a number of structural challenges in the field:
- Job opportunities within Ayurveda are limited in India
- The treatments are both physically and professionally demanding
- The salary for panchakarma therapists is generally low
- The results come gradually and require time and patience

Herbs & Ayurveda
Ayurveda and especially Dr. Unni use a lot of herbs.
Tulsi is one of the special herbs. Tulsi holy basil – is a plant that is widely used as in ghee, tea, ointments and herbal medicine.
It supports the body in dealing with stress, strengthens the immune system and creates balance. It has a calming effect on the nervous system, helps with sleep and provides clarity of mind.
Tulsi grows in many places and is easily available.
Tulsi is sacred in Hinduism. It is said that the goddess Lakshmi incarnated as the Tulsi plant. Therefore, the leaves are not picked before sunrise and after sunset.
Panchakarma Terapuet

A panchakarma therapist certification is a training course in Ayurveda, where you learn to perform deep cleansing and restorative treatments for the body.
Panchakarma means “five actions” and refers to a number of classic cleansing methods that aim to remove waste products (ama), restore balance in the body and strengthen digestion, the nervous system and vitality.
As a panchakarma therapist, you are trained in:
Performing Ayurvedic oil massages and treatments
Working with medicinal oils and herbs
Supporting the body’s cleansing processes in a gentle way
Reading the body’s signals and adapting treatments individually
The training often also includes knowledge of anatomy, doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), diet, lifestyle and care before, during and after a panchakarma course.
A diploma in panchakarma nursing means that the therapist is trained in both the treatments and in taking care of the client throughout the course – with care, attention and understanding of the body’s processes.
Panchakarma is considered in Ayurveda to be one of the deepest therapeutic processes to restore balance between the Air element (Vata), Fire element (Pitta) and Earth element (Kapha).
